For the first seven to 10 days, new sod requires five to 10 minutes of watering, two to three times daily.

Mow your sod during the fall, lowering the blade on your mower slightly each time until the grass is between 1 and 1 1/2 inches tall. New sod will be hungry for nutrition.
Below are some ways to ensure adequate care for your new sod. This helps get all of the old dead grass out of the way from winter and allows the new spring grass to come up well. In the beginning, apply 1 ⁄ 2 inch (1.3 cm) of water.
It is imperative you douse your sod with water as soon as you lay it, within the first hour at the latest. New sod is more vulnerable to diseases, being wet for long periods of time can encourage this. In the winter you may need to wait longer for the roots to establish prior to mowing.
Reduce watering to three times a week the next week and then once a week thereafter. Set your lawn mower at its highest setting, lowering a setting each mowing until the lawn is cut at 2 inches. During the winter, rainfall may suffice, but about 0.25 inches of water may be necessary each week.
After sodding, frequently and gently pull up sod edges to make sure the soil is moist. Turn off your water for 1 to 2 days to firm the soil to allow foot and mower traffic. Care of newly laid sod water the sod well and repeat as needed to avoid desiccation.
